Senator McCain and Now Brueggemann Gone from BoT – Who’s next?!

It appears that the “house cleaning” of the board of trustees that many wish to see has already started thanks to the two recent resignations.

 The healing process HAS begun.

McCain, while I bizarrely think he’s still a viable candidate for US President, did diddly squat during his tenure as a BoT member. Apparently, his track record for attending BoT meetings was worse than my own track record of attending classes while I was a student at Gallaudet and THAT’s definitely not one worth bragging about.

The next Senator seated on the BoT needs to be a freshman Senator, one that is keenly interested in Gallaudet University and still fresh enough to retain curiousity and exert some degree of involvement, instead of an older Senator who joins simply to go through the motions and having the privelege of adding the position to their exhaustive list on their political resumes.

As for Brueggemann, one of her comments in her notice of resignation was particularly revealing:

“Since I became Acting Chair in May 2006, my personal life, and my professional work as a scholar, teacher, and administrator at my own university, have suffered considerably. I can no longer justify these personal and professional costs.”

I certainly would be frazzled at the sight of people protesting outside of my house and office as well. We should be glad that she has the good sense to resign for whatever reason. Prior to her resignation, she didn’t earn any brownie points with me by virtue of her lack of reasonable and timely response as leader of the BoT.

Regardless, I still say good luck to you, Miss Brueggemann.

Now, Private Investigator wants to hear from you as to who’s the next likely person to resign, whether its from the BoT or administration!

  1. Rev. Jay Croft Says:

The “Inside Gallaudet” press release did not make it clear whether she has resigned from the BoT. Has she only resigned from the Chair, remaining a Board member?

This needs to be cleared up.

IKJ, PK and MC in Gally Adm., must be fired now! We are suffering in the memories of their horrible action.

  3. International Deaf Says:

IKJ, PK and MC must be fired for now! International deaf people

  4. Brian Riley Says:

Goodness, common sense says she must have resigned completely from the Board. If not, then that would be horrible of Gallaudet not to spell it out clearly.

  5. testing_the_truth Says:

I don’t think Brenda Jo resigned from the Board membership. She looks like not having the moral stance Celia Baldwin, her predecessor had.

  6. A Voice Says:

Umm… IKJ is going to quit anyway in December.

If you fire IKJ, you have to pay him off. If you let him resign, he’s gone.

Think a bit, please. You are advocating an action that will cause MORE harm to Gallaudet. Do you really want to do that?

  7. Deaf Advocate Says:

    More heads to roll soon!

I am not sure if it is good idea to hire polticians as BOT because I remember 4 Congressmen(true or myth) did not want to vote to pick new president in last Spring because of their conflict of interests. Let Alumni choose new BOT members in what King was not supposed to pick new BOT since 5 years.
I am glad that Chair resigned so we won’t have the same old things for many years. We need a whole new ideology of BOT to support empowerment of students’ right to have good education.

DAYS OF GALLAUDET UNIVERSITY ARE ADDING UP AND WE HAVE NO SOLUTION TO TERRIBLE ABUSIVE POWER CAUSED BY ADMINISTRATION AND DPS, STILL. WE NEED OUR RIGHTS TO BE HEARD!

  11. Tom Willard Says:

I was also confused if she resigned completely or only as president. I contacted Mercy Coogan at GU and she got right back to me and said that she has resigned from the board completely.

    Just hold on your horse!!!

I think but I am not sure that I am cleared that Brenda wants to meet and talk with the Prez of GUAA and the alumnians first. I think that she has some reaons to meet the GUAA Alumnians and prez first??? I may be misunderstood with GUAA prez announcement.

One thing that should be investigated is what I’ve “heard” about Ken Levinson’s term having expired a while back, and in spite of term limits, King found a way to keep him on the board. I want him to go, and I’d like to know whether or not there’s any truth to that. Either way, let’s start pressuring the board to make sure no one has stayed past their term.

  16. Rob Says:

While you blasted McCain for not attending the BoT meetings, you should look into how much attendances both Democratic Representatives (LaHood and Woolsey) have with the BoT meetings. Traditionally, honorary members from the Congress are not always obliged to attend every BoT meeting. That’s why they are called “honorary” trustees, not full-fledged, participating trustees. Their jobs are to represent the federal government of the United States for Gallaudet University in important functions.

I wish to point Private Investigator out on this Gallaudet bypass: Section 2.2.4 Honorary Trustees. Those individuals who have or who may serve the University and the advocacy of the education of deaf and hard of hearing persons with distinction may be elected Honorary Trustees. Such Trustees MAY attend meetings and serve on committees, but shall serve without vote.

So one less Senator in the Gallaudet Board of Trustees will mean quite a daunting task for Vice President Dick Cheney to select a Senator and put him there!! Heheh. He’ll have to find which Senator that works with deaf people before (a requirement for a Honorary trustee).

  17. gwl Says:

That is right. It was embarrassing how Ridor blasted at Honorary McCain in his blog.
Even many Democrats look up at him.

  18. Private Investigator Says:

Actually, Rob, you’re looking at the wrong bylaws.

    McCain WAS a voting member:

Section 2.2.1 Voting Trustees — Public Members. Three Voting Trustees shall be public members (”Public Members”), one of whom shall be a United States Senator appointed by the President of the Senate, and two shall be Members of the House of Representatives appointed by the Speaker of the House. The Public Members shall be appointed for a term of two years commencing at the beginning of each Congress, shall be eligible for reappointment, and shall serve until their successors are appointed.

  19. wildstarryskies Says:

What democrats look up at him? Oh, you read that in the newspaper? The same newspapers that supported the Iraq War until recently? Yep, them.

Don’t be gullible to believe the PR spin about McCain. I was one of them too, but his behavior the last few years as a member of Congress has been disgraceful. His contribution to the BOT the last few years has been nonexistent. I am glad he is gone.

  20. blueowl Says:

People like Ridor ran around blasting uglily at both Brenda Brueggemann and John McCain due to Ridor’s inability to read exactly. Dr. Brueggemann only stepped down as BoT chairwoman. Honorable John McCain can influence the big wigs on Capital Hill about how brutal the protest deafies can be. Now the congress saw that and agree that decent and bright Dr. Jane Fernandes should be reinstated.
I am sure that the next protest, every protesters will be arrested by order of the congress in order to keep the gates opened and to clean up Gallaudet campus. It was known that many tents were used as decoys with almost no one sleeping in them.

  21. Rob Says:

Oh, thanks for pointing that out, PI!

    I stand corrected.
